A Shakespeare Nation, celebration!
Shakespeare Nation is a national programme aimed at adult communities who might not think theatre and Shakespeare are for them, delivered in partnership between the RSC and Newcastle Theatre Royal.

Considered by many literary critics to be Shakespeare’s greatest play Hamlet has seeped into all aspects of our popular culture. With complex characters, intricate plot, and themes of revenge, madness, and existentialism Hamlet is seen as the ultimate role for aspiring actors.

Written 424 years ago it has stood the test of time…or has it? Times have changed but Hamlet’s self-indulgent treatment of women hasn’t. Hamlet belittles, insults, and manipulates Queen Gertrude and Ophelia reflecting the patriarchal society of the time where women were often blamed for men’s problems.

As part of the RSC’s Shakespeare Nation project Newcastle Theatre Royal brought together a female led community company comprising of food bank volunteers, ex-NHS workers, teachers and generally amazing women to explore the subject of how Queen Gertrude and Ophelia are regarded in Hamlet.

Over a few weeks the group have created an original take on Hamlet and its mostly neglected characters.
