On Sunday 28 June, Something in the Water returns to Newcastle Theatre Royal for two special performances. Hosted by South Shields-born star Joe McElderry, and powered by funk-soul supergroup Groovetrain, the event builds on the success of last year’s spectacular, bringing together leading names from music, theatre, comedy and television for a unique, feel-good showcase rooted in regional pride and community impact.
At its core, the event is about creating opportunities for the next generation. Presented by Newcastle Theatre Royal, Something in the Water will raise vital funds to support the theatre’s Creative Engagement programme, including bursaries for young people to attend the Theatre Royal Youth Theatre and Project A, its year-long actor training course. In addition, 50% of proceeds will be donated to NEMO (North East Music Opportunities CIC), enabling the organisation to continue delivering inclusive, community-led music-making opportunities across the region.
A key part of this year’s programme is a dedicated Industry Day (Tuesday 19 May), offering young people from the North East invaluable insight into the creative industries. Inspired by The X Factor – the show that launched Joe McElderry’s career – participants will have the opportunity to gain expert advice and mentoring from established industry professionals, with a lucky few invited to join the final line-up and perform on stage at Newcastle Theatre Royal.
The centrepiece of Something in the Water remains two uplifting fundraising performances on Sunday 28 June at 2.30pm and 7.30pm, blending the charm of a cabaret-style show with the energy of a live music concert.
This year’s line-up showcases a wealth of much-loved and homegrown talent. Confirmed names include Danny Adams, Si King, Jason Cook, Michael Marouli and West End stars Adam Strong, Christina Bianco and Carly Burns, alongside further special guests still to be announced. Many of the performers share strong ties to the region and to Newcastle Theatre Royal itself, including Joe McElderry and Danny Adams, who are firm audience favourites and regular stars of the Theatre Royal’s much-loved pantomime. Musical fans can sing along to hits from Aladdin, The Rocky Horror Show and Bat Out of Hell.
Joe McElderry said: “Something in the Water is all about celebrating where we come from and giving something back. The North East has incredible talent, and it’s so important we create opportunities for young people to explore that. I’m especially proud that this event supports both the Theatre Royal and NEMO – it’s about giving young people real opportunities and making sure talent here in the region has the chance to shine.”
Kim Hoffman, Director of Creative Development at Newcastle Theatre Royal, added:
“We’re delighted to present Something in the Water once again. It’s a brilliant showcase of regional talent, but crucially the funds raised help us provide bursaries that open doors for young people to take part. Through our Youth Theatre, participants build confidence, wellbeing and performance skills, while Project A provides progression routes to equip young people with the professional experience and industry-ready skills needed to move forward. Working with partners like NEMO strengthens our shared commitment to access and opportunity in the arts.”
Something in the Water plays Newcastle Theatre Royal Sun 28 Jun 2026. Tickets can be purchased here or from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 0191 232 7010.
