As Newcastle Theatre Royal looks ahead to its 200th anniversary in 2037, we’re launching a conversation about the future.
Vision 2037 is an opportunity for audiences, participants, artists, partners, supporters and staff to help shape the next chapter of Newcastle Theatre Royal and its role in the cultural life of our city and region.
For nearly two centuries, Newcastle Theatre Royal has been part of the fabric of the North East. Decisions made today will ensure that it continues to inspire, entertain and create opportunities for generations to come.
Now, we’re asking: what should that future look like?
The North East has a tremendous opportunity ahead of it. Through Vision 2037, we want to explore how Newcastle Theatre Royal can continue to play a meaningful role in the social, cultural and economic life of our region in the years ahead.
We want to hear a wide range of perspectives about:
- The future of theatre and live performance
- Access, inclusion and participation
- Supporting creativity, artists and local talent
- Our impact on communities across the North East
- Caring for and developing our historic theatre
- The role culture can play in shaping the future of our region

The Vision 2037 survey is open to everyone to share your thoughts, ideas and aspirations for Newcastle Theatre Royal.
It takes around 6 minutes to complete.
The survey will remain open until 14 December 2026.
Alongside these public sessions, we’ll have dedicated sessions to speak with audiences, artists, schools, community groups, businesses, cultural organisations and civic partners throughout the consultation period.
Join a Vision 2037 Conversation
We’re hosting a series of informal Vision 2037 Conversations in the Green Room at Newcastle Theatre Royal.
These open sessions are a chance to meet members of our team, learn more about the consultation, ask questions and share your views in person. Whether you’re a regular theatre-goer, an occasional visitor, an artist, community partner, or someone who has never visited us before, we’d love to hear from you.

What Happens Next?
The consultation will run until December 2026.
We’ll carefully review everything we hear and use those insights to help shape Newcastle Theatre Royal’s long-term vision, developing a roadmap towards the theatre our region needs and wants us to be in 2037.
We’ll share what we’ve learned, and the next steps for Vision 2037, in Spring 2027, during the theatre’s 190th anniversary year.
