Bravo 22 Company

Bravo 22 Company, an award-winning recovery through the arts programme, is made possible by The Royal British Legion and The Drive Project. Actor Ray Winstone is the Bravo 22 Company’s Ambassador. For 3 years, Newcastle Theatre Royal successfully delivered the company’s Theatre projects.

Working with wounded, injured and sick (WIS) service personnel, veterans and their family members, we created 3 large scale theatre productions

Wor Stories

50 participants from the WIS community engaged in this bespoke 6 month project which culminated in a piece of new writing, Wor Stories, being performed at Newcastle Theatre Royal. 100% of those who took part stated that they felt the projects’ outcomes had been satisfied and that engaging had aided their recovery and well-being.

Unspoken

This year long project was the most ambitious of all Bravo 22 Company’s work to date. Engaging participants from all over the UK, the script was created using the stories and experiences of 100 members of the WIS community. The culmination was a full scale production, opening at Newcastle Theatre Royal on Remembrance Sunday 2017.

Unspoken (reworked) Tour

Following the success and reception of Unspoken, the script was reworked to 70 minutes and embarked upon a national tour. Following a critically acclaimed Edinburgh Festival residency in 2018 st The Pleasance, the tour culminated in a House of Commons performance followed by a gala event at Sadlers Wells.

Remembrance Project

Newcastle Theatre Royal played host to part of the 2017 National campaign of Remembrance, working with the Royal British Legion. Working with members of the wider Bravo 22 Company, a short film was made sharing their stories and experiences of war. Shot on location in Weston-super-Mare, the film was played on large screens around London and Newcastle City centre following a premier screening at the theatre before the Unspoken play premiere.

The ‘Centenary Soldier’ outside the Theatre Royal on Grey Street served as the centrepiece for the launch of the years Poppy Appeal which was in situ for the duration of the campaign.

Award-winning artist Mark Humphrey was commissioned to produce the sculpture (which stands on a plinth of limestone sourced from the Somme) by the Royal British Legion to celebrate the Every One Remembered campaign.

Project A

Project A began in 2015 in response to the high volume of young people from the North East of England unable to access formal, high quality actor training. Initially funded by the Barbour Foundation as a year long pilot, the first intake of students trained for one year at no cost to them. Such was the success of the project, Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust decided to continue to fund a full time actor training provision, at a heavily subsidised rate, for all young people aged 18-25. Now in its 6th year, Over 90% of our graduates work professionally within the industry, gain agent representation or are accepted into Drama School within 6 months of graduating.
