Deputy Stage Manager

Salary: £34,196.21 per annum

Hours: 42.5 hours per week (39 plus 3.5 hours of “get out”) annualised over 52 weeks. Regular evening, weekend, bank holiday and seasonal (Christmas) working is required.

 

The Deputy Stage Manager is responsible for assisting with the smooth running of the Stage department, deputising for the Stage Manager in their absence, and ensuring a first class production and technical service is delivered across all aspects of the Theatre Royal’s work.

Main Tasks

  • As a member of the Stage Technical Department, providing support for all productions, to include:
    • Working on get-ins, fit-ups and rigging, strikes and get-outs, to include assistance, when appropriate, for the Electrics and Wardrobe departments
    • The preparation of stage sets and equipment, props and stage resources
    • Supervision of Stage and Electrics casual staff
    • Support for visiting stage management teams
    • Working as Duty Resident Stage Manager, responsible for the smooth running of a performance and ensuring all companies are aware of the relevant Health and Safety and Fire procedures
    • Crewing performances
  • Ensuring that working areas and equipment are kept in a clean, tidy and safe condition; responsible for the day to day maintenance of the stages and flying equipment including the regular testing of all stage equipment as required by the trust’s licenses, insurance and Health and Safety Policy; monitoring and ensuring appropriate Health and Safety equipment is in stock, in place and used appropriately. Assistance with routine building maintenance.
  • Supporting the Stage Manager in ensuring that all Stage staff work efficiently and effectively, with a pro-active approach to multi-skilling, working practices and positive attitudes.
  • Undertaking such other relevant duties as may be requested from time to time by the Stage Manager.

 

Essential skills and knowledge required

  • Knowledge and experience of double purchase counterweight flying systems
  • Experience of working in a Grid
  • Experience of production and Show flying
  • Knowledge and experience of basic Stage Hand skills
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to establish professional and personal credibility across the theatre with visiting companies
  • Understands the importance of providing a high quality experience for audiences/visiting companies through excellent stage management
  • An interest and ability to be part of a strong team and assist where appropriate with the development of their professional skills and knowledge
  • The ability to lead the team in the absence of the Stage Manager
  • Committed to continuing own professional development and knowledge, keeping up to date with technological advances.

 

Desirable skills and knowledge

  • Basic carpentry skills
  • Experience of working at height access equipment
  • Basic IT computer skills (the ability to complete timesheets, reports, spreadsheets etc.)
