Audio Description

by Benjamin Britten, presented by Opera North

Britten’s edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller is based on Henry James's chilling ghost story of the same name. A governess fights to protect two children from malign spirits, but are the spirits real or figments of her imagination?

Britten’s hauntingly atmospheric music winds up the tension to breaking point, and this 1920s-set production will grip from first note to last.

Britten described James' chilling ghost story as the "..nearest to me of any I have chosen (although what that indicates of my own character I shouldn't say!)"  The theme of the Turn of the Screw - of innocence abused and corrrupted - had a particular fascination for him, and he clothes this dark material in music of ethereal beauty.

Elizabeth Atherton sings what is probably Britten's most intriging and complex soprano role; Music Director Richard Farnes conducts; and a hugely talented young director / designer team of three makes its Opera North debut.
