by Bellini
Presented by Opera North
"Love burns fiercer than fire"
One of the greatest of Italian operas, Norma marks the climax of the bel canto repertoire, and in ‘Casta diva’, contains one of the most prized of all soprano arias which made legends of both Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland.
Bellini’s long, sumptuous melodies, lush orchestration and Norma’s story of fierce passion, battle and sacrifice will move you to tears.
Dutch soprano Annemarie Kremer takes the title role.
Sung in Italian with English titles

Dutch soprano Annemarie Kremer... is simply sensational
Anthony Arblaster, The Independent ****
…scene after scene pierces to the core of the drama, and there are moments when the evening touches greatness.
George Hall, The Guardian ***
As always, the Chorus of Opera North were magnificent, building from a soft chant to a great emotional wall of sound as the opera drew to a close ... It is hard to imagine anyone that could hear the final heart-wrenching notes of this opera and not be moved
Laura Wilson, Bachtrack
Annemarie Kremer was a Norma to be reckoned with. Where has this Dutch soprano been hiding, why haven’t we heard of her before?
Antony Lias, Opera Britannia
…the production and all the individual performances have a coherence and intensity which marks this Norma out as one of the company's real triumphs.
Anthony Arblaster, The Independent ****
