The Theatre Royal is one of Europe’s leading theatres and has played an important role in the cultural life of our region for over 170 years. It has offered a wonderful forum for learning as well as entertainment, offering many people their first experience of a Shakespeare play, a ballet or an opera.

The Theatre Royal Trust is a registered charity and works with the business community, charitable trusts and individuals to ensure the continuing success of our work. Our Development Office has two key objectives: support for learning programmes at the Theatre and funding to enhance facilities for our audiences in the celebrated Grade 1 Listed building.

Our well established learning programme has strong links with many local schools and provides a wide range of opportunities for learning and participation linked to productions at the Theatre Royal including partnerships with the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, Opera North, Rambert Dance Company and other leading companies from the UK and abroad.

Education is fundamental to the Theatre Royal’s mission and our aim is to introduce a wider range of people to the life-enhancing world of the performing arts. We believe, in the words of our Patron, Dame Judi Dench, that ‘theatre should be for everyone’ and that social or economic disadvantage should not form a barrier to this world. Accordingly our education work is concentrated in disadvantaged schools in the region.

If you would like to discuss this work, please call Richard Berg Rust, Director of Development on 0191 244 2519 or email richard.berg-rust@theatreroyal.co.uk.
