The Theatre Royal Newcastle is one of Europe’s leading theatres and has played an important role in the cultural life of the North East for over 170 years, a wonderful forum for learning and entertainment. It is the northern home of the Royal Shakespeare Company and was recently described by Sir Ian Mckellen as ‘ my favourite theatre’.
We have full charitable status and our Development Offices works with the Friends of the Theatre, businesses, trusts and foundations, and individuals to ensure the continuing success of our work. There are three key objectives:
• conserving and protecting the Grade 1 Listed building
• supporting a wide range of learning programmes at the Theatre
• enhancing facilities for audiences and performers
• securing the long-term viability of the Theatre as a world-class presenting venue
We aim to introduce the widest possible range of people to the life-enhancing world of the performing arts. In the words of our Patron, Dame Judi Dench, ‘theatre should be for everyone’ and social or economic disadvantage should not form a barrier to this world. Accordingly our education work is concentrated in disadvantaged schools in the region.
